Biodiesel Analysis
Biodiesel is the transesterification product of triglycerides of vegetable oils with methanol to form fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs).
The by-products from the synthesis - including glycerol, monoacylglycerols, diacylglycerols, unreacted triglycerudes and fatty acids - can eventually cause engine problems. To prevent engine problems, all biodiesel fuel bought and sold in the U.S. must meet exacting standards set by organizations such as American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM).
Thermo Fisher Scientific's family of analytical instruments can provide solutions for all your Biodiesel analysis needs, regardless of the method you select.
Near-Infrared Analysis for Biodiesel
Antaris analyzers provide multi-component analysis of contaminants in Biodiesel in real time allowing for process adjustments to be made more quickly than with conventional laboratory analysis. Key components that can be analyzed for inline include total glycerol, methanol, water and FAME. The ability to analyze samples inline, online or at-line allows each facility to set up the ideal monitoring protocol for their process. The implementation of Antaris analyzers will make the process more efficient and ensure product will be in-specification before final product testing.

FT-IR Analysis for Biodiesel
The Biodiesel Analysis Toolkit was developed to provide fast, accurate analysis of Biodiesel using FT-IR spectroscopy and Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR). The toolkit tests for the presence of FAME produced by the transesterification process. The toolkit provides a framework that allows for quick, accurate calibration of samples and reproducible analysis based on that calibration.

iCAP 6000 Series for Biodiesel Analysis
The Thermo Scientific iCAP radial ICP is ideal for the analysis of biodiesel and its blends. With freedom from carbon-based emission interferences and full wavelength coverage from 167 nm to 847 nm with Full-frame capabilities, batch trend analysis and contamination identification between batches of biodiesel is fast, simple and accurate.
The iCAP has already proven itself in the field of fuel analysis. It was employed by Shell Global Solutions in the mobile laboratory at the 24 hour Le Mans race 2007 for monitoring fuel quality.

LC/MS Analysis for Biodiesel
Thermo Scientific provides a simple but efficient LC/MS platform for the analysis of biodiesels. The high speed LC/MS system permits the analysis to be achieved in 20 minutes compared to 60 minutes for a conventional LC/MS method. The extended mass range of the LC/MS instrument combined with the ability to inject, separate, and ionize compounds provided data followed by the ASTM specification. The patented cone-wash integrated into the electrospray source of the mass spectrometer allowed for the uninterrupted analysis of complicated sample matrices.
