Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and IR Microscopy

Dramatically cut analysis times for identifying unknowns -- even in difficult matrices.

In forensics science, Infrared spectroscopy is regarded as a relatively inexpensive technique capable of quickly and simply indentifying materials without the need for direct contact with the evidence. Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectrometers from Thermo Fisher Scientific couple numerous sampling techniques with extensive spectral libraries, and enable you to identify just about any sample that comes through the lab.

IR Microspectroscopy has become a "must have" instrument in the modern forensics sciences lab. It facilitates the chemical identification of very small samples such as fibers and textiles, paints and coatings, particles, glass and hair. Imaging applications enable you to map the material in two or three dimensions, and match the sample to known substances.

Nicolet 380 FT-IR Spectrometer
Nicolet 380 FT-IR SpectrometerDesigned to make FT-IR easy, the Nicolet 380 uses complete system integration, plug and play sampling, and computer-based expertise to guide the user through all aspects of the sample analysis process with confidence. OMNICTM  software provides the most intuitive and user-friendly interface in the industry.

Nicolet 6700 FT-IR Spectrometer
Nicolet 670 FT-IR SpectrometerThe Nicolet 6700 FT-IR spectrometer is a fully upgradeable, routine and advanced research FT-IR spectrometer focused on stability and efficiency. The Nicolet 6700 includes add-on capabilities for IR microscopy, IR-GC techniques and FT-Raman sampling. No other FT-IR spectrometers as many features and options for flexibility and upgradability.

Nicolet Continuµm Infrared Microscope
When Infrared Microscopy is required, the Nicolet Continuµm is ready to handle to job. The versitile IR microscope combines high performance optical microscopy, video image capturing, unparalleled infrared performance and a wide range of sampling tools specifically designed to manipulate fibers, particles and other microscopic objects.

TruView Optics, combined with spectral collection in preview mode, allows you to get results "on the fly" while moving the sample. This is the most effective sample screening you can get from an infrared microscope.

Transport Kit Portable FT-IR
Transport Kit Portable FT-IRThis kit is designed specifically for rapid response teams and portable laboratories.  It is useful for analyzing samples at hazardous material sites, forensic scenes, and clandestine labs.  Local, state, and federal entities that require the ability to quickly identify unknown materials will find the Transport Kit a valuable tool for on-site sample analysis.

Smart Orbit ATR Sampling Accessory
Smart Orbit ATR Sampling AccessoryFeaturing high-performance diamond single-bounce ATR, this accessory provides the ability to analyze hard, abrasive, or caustic materials. It uses a real Type IIA diamond for ruggedness and versatility. Because diamond has a wide spectral range and good depth of penetration, it is a good choice for more common samples, too. Ideal for liquids (ranging from ph 1 to 14), fibers, hard or oddly shaped samples, abrasive, caustic or corrosive materialsin all sizes.

Spectral Libaries
Critical to the identification of unknowns or verification of suspected substances, FT-IR spectral libraries from Thermo Fisher Scientific provide an extensive collection of materials relevant to forensic sciences.

Toronto Forensic Library  - Contains FT-IR spectra of illegal and legal drugs, drug precursors, reagents used to prepare them and other substances encountered in forensic analysis. 3,549 spectra included. View list (pdf).

Common Materials and White Powders Spectral Library - Contains spectra of commonly found commercial products and white powders, such as baking soda, flour, and Vitamin C.

Synthetic Fibers by Microscope FT-IR Spectral Library - Contains FT-IR microscope transmission spectra of synthetic fibers from the Collaborative Testing Services Reference Collection of Synthetic Fibers. View list (pdf).
