Drinking water quality in the EU is regulated under the European Council Directive 98/83/EC on the quality of water intended for human consumption.

Of concern to labs performing drinking water analysis to check compliance with these regulations are the required analytical performance characteristics set out in the document. These are based on the prescriptive concentration values (PCVs) which are essentially the maximum allowable level of each contaminant. The relevant values are given in the table below.
