The 25th LC/MS Montreux Symposium, November 12-14, 2008
Historical Perspectives and a Future Outlook: The "Montreux LC/MS" series originated in 1980 under the organization of the International Association of Environmental Analytical Chemistry and was initially held in Montreux, Switzerland. This meeting has enjoyed ever increasing popularity due to the organization (Gordon Conference type atmosphere), attendance by leading practitioners in the field and the growth of LC/MS into the mainstream of analytical techniques.

The metabolome (a set of all metabolites of an organism) represents not only the ultimate phenotype of cells by perturbation of cellular function, but the metabolome can also affect back on cellular function. Therefore, metabolomics plays a key role for understanding cellular systems. Metabolomics research is important in the field of plant science, because plants collectively produce a huge variety of chemical compounds, far more than animals and even microorganisms. Most of the human-beneficial properties of plants, such as for foods, medicinal resources, or industrial raw materials, are ascribed to plant metabolites.

The American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) was formed in 1969 to promote and disseminate knowledge of mass spectrometry and allied topics. Membership includes over 7,000 scientists involved in research and development. Members come from academic, industrial and governmental laboratories. Their interests include advancement of techniques and instrumentation in mass spectrometry, as well as fundamental research in chemistry, geology, forensics, biological sciences and physics.

It is intended to be a friendly and informal opportunity to present and discuss the latest developments in the field, and follows on from the highly successful meetings at the University of Cambridge, UK and Imperial College London. The founding principal of the Metabomeeting series remains; that is to provide a platform for the discussion of the current practise of metabolic profiling from researchers at all levels, from all scientific sectors.
