Featured Application:
NIR and Raman: Complementary Techniques for Raw Material Identification
Raw Material Identification is a critical part of quality control and process analytics in the pharmaceutical industry. Spectroscopy techniques offer an efficient, fast and easy way to get answers. Near infrared is a very robust method of analysis that can be used in the process plant and by process employees with very little training and it is effective in most applications. For particularly challenging samples that do not absorb well in the near-infrared region, Raman spectroscopy can be used. The combination of the Thermo Scientific Antaris FT-NIR analyzer and the Thermo Scientific DXR SmartRamanspectrometer has been shown to be extraordinarily powerful in identifying nearly any conceivable raw material used in the pharmaceutical industry.

New Technical Note: REACH Compliance
REACH is a set of regulations designed to ensure all chemicals used in the European Union have been properly tested and safely used. This affects nearly all chemical producers worldwide even if they do not do business with the European Union. Thermo Scientific NIR analyzersoffer spectroscopic solutions to issues related to testing the chemicals, developing safe guidelines, and ensuring compliance with those guidelines. A technical note has recently been developed to show how NIR can assist in moving chemical manufacturers and users into REACH compliance.

EMEA Draft Update
The European Medicines Agency is updating their guideline on using NIR in the pharmaceutical industry. The new guideline will provide guidance on the development, calibration, validation and maintenance of NIR methods. Changes to the previous version reflect the increase in industry and governmental experience with NIR. Methods that are now detailed in European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) will not be thoroughly described in the new EMEA guideline. New regulations related to ICH Q8 or PAT will also affect the new version. It will clarify to industry which data is part of GMP and which data needs to be submitted to the regulatory competent authorities for variations and new submissions.

I am trying to do Raw Material Identification and I know that FT-NIR can penetrate through the sample bag. But don't you get a residual signal from the bag in the process? Doesn't that affect your calibration?
