In May 2008 the United States Department of Energy (DOE) indicated by way of a letter to source manufacturers that by the end of 2008 it would no longer manufacture californium-252 (Cf-252), the isotope used by Thermo Fisher as an excitation source in its online elemental analyzers. This unanticipated decision by the DOE was precipitated by the fact that the US government apparently no longer needed the isotope for its own use. An immediate response, sustained over nine months, by source suppliers and end users was able to reverse this decision. In July 2009 the DOE affirmed its long-term commitment to the manufacture of Cf-252. We at Thermo Fisher take pride in the leading role we played in protesting the initial action by the DOE and in forging a solution acceptable to all parties. We are the leading contributor in the funding of the DOE's Cf-252 program.
