Thermo Fisher Scientific's team of experts answers your toughest application questions!

Dear Thermo:

1. My jobs are quality control of polyurethane and polyol analysis such as hydroxyl number and water content in product. Can I use NIR for both analysis methods?—Sam H.

2. I run a small diagnostics lab in Central Minnesota. Are there sample analysis systems that require minimal training and supervision?—Dan H.

3. Can I use the FT-NIR technique to quantitate organic molecules in water with no sample prep? Lowest concentration is just above 0.5% (w/w) in water. Molecular weight is about 140g/m.—Dan H.

4. Can the MX fiber optic NIR system be used in a transmissive mode? Or is it strictly reflective with a coaxial fiber bundle? —Larry C.

5. Could this system be used to detect low levels of ethanol vapor in line? If so, what type of detection limits are possible.—Art B.

6. Can I use NIR to detect molecular structure information? Why do we need to do statitics when we use NIR?—Dan H.

7. Do you have an instrument that is handheld that can measure moisture of metallized paper during a process?—Dan H.

8. Do you have any pre-populated calibration sets for yeast and yeast products? We would like to use an NIR to test Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Total Dry Matter and Washed Dry Matter. Would we need to build our own calibration sets, or do you offer that as a service?—Dan H.

9. I am interested in a continuous on line measurement of an active drug in a pharmaceutical process.—Dan H.

10. I am looking for an NIR or FT-NIR instrument to perform absorbance or diffuse reflectance measurements on faceted gemstones from 1000 to 6000 cm-1. I am most interested in the 3000 to 5000 cm-1 region. Would any of your instruments be able to do that?—Dan H.

11. I have a question regarding NIR and fat analysis - in particular, can it be used in place of anisidine tests of rancid fat? (i.e., 2-alkenals or 2,4- dienals) Although not a NIR question, can you suggest a quick way to extract fat (for use in the anisidine test) - something automatic -other than a soxlet type? ~5gram sample size? Please let me know.—Dan H.

12. Recently added one more Antaris II analyzer to an existing inventory one Antaris and an Avatar. At this time, we qualify incoming raw materials and quantify some of our liquid medicines for soft gelatin capsules. We are looking into testing the viscosity of the molten gelatin that will be used in the manufacture of soft gelatin capsules. Are there any existing test protocols or applcations for this type of testing? I am looking to find standard methods of testing within the industry, both chemical testing and NIR scanning.—Matt

13. Can I perform X analysis using NIR instead of FT-IR?—Dan H.
