CHICAGO, Ill. (February 26, 2007) – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, introduced two revolutionary handheld X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzers: the NITON® XLt 898He and NITON XLt 797X. The NITON XLt 898He alloy analyzer is the first truly nondestructive portable instrument able to measure light elements in metal alloys. The NITON XLt  797X analyzer measures sample areas 20 times smaller any other portable XRF instrument, enabling users to quickly and accurately test individual electronic components and other small samples for Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and other compliance testing. Both new instruments will be showcased at Thermo Scientific booth #1437 at PITTCON 2007, being held February 26 to March 2 in Chicago, Illinois.
Simultaneously measuring 27 sample elements from magnesium (Mg) through bismuth (Bi), the new Thermo Scientific NITON XLt 898He provides fast-grade identification and laboratory-quality chemical analysis of a wide range of metal alloys, including aluminum and titanium, stainless steels, nickel and superalloys. These alloys are used extensively in aviation, aerospace and other mission-critical applications where a single incorrect or out-of-specification piece of metal can have catastrophic consequences. The XLt 898He rapidly measures magnesium (Mg), aluminum (Al), silicon (Si), phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) content in metals, enabling quality inspectors and metal recyclers who need to quantify these light elements to take advantage of the low cost, speed and convenience provided by portable XRF analysis. By purging the atmosphere in the instrument with helium gas, the NITON XLt 898He detects low-energy fluorescent X-rays of light elements that are not transmitted through air, taking the analytical capabilities of handheld XRF instruments to a new level.
The new Thermo Scientific NITON XLt 797X provides fast, accurate analysis of individual small electronic components, previously achievable only with stationary instruments. Incorporating proprietary miniature X-ray tube focusing technology and an integrated camera, the handheld XLt 797X quickly isolates and analyzes samples as small as 3 mm in diameter. Thermo Scientific NITON analyzers are used extensively for on-site, nondestructive screening of polymers, solders and electronic components for RoHS, WEEE and ELV compliance. Thousands of manufacturers use XRF analysis for component-level screening and verification testing to ensure the validity of vendors’ RoHS compliance declarations and certifications. The NITON XLt 797X is the first portable instrument capable of measuring individual components and solder joints on populated printed circuit boards (PCBs) and other heterogeneous materials, providing a highly versatile and cost effective tool for RoHS and other compliance testing.
