  July 23 2007

Food packaging engineers and quality professionals will now have further improved contaminant detection capabilities with an X-ray system that is even more flexible and easy to use.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., (July 18, 2007) – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced a major upgrade to its Thermo Scientific EZx contaminant detection system.  The upgrade, which is being launched just 18 months after the successful introduction of the EZx system, includes numerous customer-based enhancements to the software and hardware components of the system.  Food packaging engineers and quality professionals will now have further improved contaminant detection capabilities with an X-ray system that is even more flexible and easy to use. Thermo Fisher Scientific will also offer a comprehensive software and hardware upgrade to existing customers, and all of the recent improvements have been made standard or are available as options on new EZx systems.

“As a world leader in contaminant detection for the food and beverage industries, Thermo Fisher Scientific continues to invest in enhancing X-ray technologies to complement our full spectrum of contaminant detection systems,” said Bob Ries, product manager for Thermo Fisher Scientific.  “With the addition of the latest EZx upgrade option, we’re reducing the barriers to widespread adoption of these technologies and thus helping our customers ensure food quality for consumers worldwide.”

“We’ve been delighted with the quality and performance of the four Thermo Scientific EZx units that are now installed at our plant in Scotland,” said Des McMenamin, training & recruitment manager at Uniq.  “We didn’t think the system could get any better, so the fact that Thermo Fisher Scientific has responded to market demand by investing in further improvements is very exciting and reassuring. It makes the purchase of additional units by Uniq even more likely for the future.”  Uniq (www.uniqplc.com) is a leading European chilled and frozen food producer, which supplies supermarkets in the UK and Europe with fresh chilled desserts, salads, sandwiches, fish, dips and dressings and ready meals.

Used as an integral part of contaminant detection in the food production process, the Thermo Scientific EZx X-ray system enables customers to benefit from Thermo Fisher Scientific’s recent advances in contaminant detection for food, pharmaceuticals and beverages to protect and extend their X-ray detection investments.  Key benefits of the Thermo Scientific EZx upgrade include:

  • Easier to Install and Use: The EZx upgrade reduces the contaminant detection learning curve through features like image zoom, smarter Quicklearn, a new edge mask and simplified image exporting.  In addition, users experience a quicker response time with a new, optimized data storage architecture.
  • More Effective in Production: The upgraded EZx systems allows users to maximize the value of their investment with new features such as run-mode filter changes, improved statistics, software belt stop and improved USB memory stick operation.  The system also improves throughput with a hardware upgrade to the image processing unit.
  • Network Enabled with More Product Storage: The upgraded EZx X-ray machine enables users to access statistics, images, programs and log files over a secure Ethernet connection.  It also expands storage capabilities to up to 500 product programs.

Backed by the extensive worldwide Thermo Fisher Scientific service network, the EZx X-ray family allows customers to fulfill their regulatory obligations for food safety and protect their brand value by preventing contaminated products from reaching the customer. EZx machines have been sold and installed in more than 20 countries around the world.  For more information on upgrade pricing and the Thermo Scientific EZx family, please visit: www.thermo.com/ezx.
