Thermo Scientific organizes an irradiated food safety presentation in China

As part of China-based “Thermo Fisher Food Safety Month”, Thermo Fisher Scientific hosted the “Irradiated Food Detection Workshop” on October 25, 2007 at the food inspection and quarantine technical center for Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection & Quarantine Bureau (SHIQ), the workshop co-organizer. The event attracted customers from regional Chinese Inspection & Quarantine Bureaus as well as related fields. The close cooperation with the Chinese governmental customers will allow Thermo Scientific to apply thermoluminescence techniques to the irradiated food detection business and play a positive role in establishing national/industrial standards and regulations in China.

With the increasing international food trade, many countries require strict regulations on inspection and labeling of irradiated food.  This issue is particularly of interest to Chinese businesses, which leads the world in exports of food-related products.  The SHIQ food inspection and quarantine technical center recognizes the need for top-quality irradiated food inspection. Thermo Scientific thermoluminescence (TL) is the one of most universal techniques in detection of irradiated food.

Thermo Scientific is the leading provider of TL technology. Detection of irradiated food is based on the silicate minerals, contained in wide range of foods: such as herbs, spices, bulbs, tubers, cereals, shellfish, fruits and vegetables. Thermo Scientific's TL technique is one of the five CAC (Codex Alimentarius Commission) standard methods, approved by CAC’s 24th conference.

The workshop consisted of expert presentations concerning the science applied as well as hands-on demonstrations of the Harshaw 3500 TLD reader.

“Live demonstration and hands-on practice like these will give great support to us, help us to develop the industrial standard operation procedure,” said Mr. Hu, lab chief of SHIQ.  “We are aiming to establish national standards in China very soon”.  Thermo Scientific thermoluminescence technology’s application in irradiated food detection will help food safety businesses in China.
