Niton XL3t handheld XRF analyzer with GOLDD technology

The Thermo Scientific Niton XL3t handheld x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer with GOLDD technology joins advanced, proprietary electronics with the most versatile x-ray tubes and one of the largest area silicon drift detectors commercially available to take your analytical capabilities to a whole new level.

   Product Detail

GOLDD Technology

GOLDD technology stands for Geometrically Optimized Large Drift Detector, and it is the cornerstone of the most significant improvement to XRF analysis since the introduction of the Thermo Scientific Niton XL3t in 2007, yielding up to a 10x performance gain over this award-winning analyzer.

GOLDD Technology: The most versatile XRF analyzer on the market

This performance gain is a function of several factors, including Geometric Advantage, Optimized Excitation, and a Large Drift Detector. Fundamentally, silicon drift detectors have the capacity to process more counting events than Si-PIN detectors traditionally used in handheld XRF analyzers. Unless the instrument has been engineered to take advantage of these counting events, it squanders the opportunity to provide dramatically improved analytical performance.

Optimized Geometry

  • Excitation intensity is exponentially proportional to the excitation voltage. Increasing the excitation voltage by 25% has a much greater effect than increasing the tube current by a similar amount
  • For the same size detector, the closer it is to the sample, the more fluorescent x-rays it will detect
  • The Niton XL3t  was designed with this optimized geometry

  • To take advantage of a detector with a higher count rate, more fluorescent x-rays must be produced by the sample
  • This is achieved using a higher voltage x-ray tube:
    • Niton XL3t - 50kV
    • Typical other technology - 40 or 45 kV
    • Excitation intensity is proportional to a high power of the excitation voltage. Increasing the excitation voltage by 25% has a much greater effect than increasing the tube current by a similar account

  • A large detector will collect more fluorescent x-rays than a small detector
  • The Niton XL3t employs one of the largest area drift detectors that is commercially available in a handheld XRF analyzer
  • With a larger sillicon drift detector, the Niton XL3t collects up to 2.5x more signal

  • This all adds up to the GOLDD Advantage
  • Up to 10x better performance than conventional Si-PIN detectors
  • 3x better performance than off-the-shelf SDD detectors

Further, the Niton XL3t GOLDD can now effectively measure elements as low as Mg without the use of helium purging or vacuum pumps. Its large surface area, combined with its ability to process over 180,000 detector events per second provide analytical performance that suits the demands of most applications including enhanced sorting of aluminum, titanium and bronze alloys, as well as superior performance for tramp and trace element analysis. Additionally, for those in mining and mineral exploration, the detection limits are now low enough that you can identify anomalies at or below the averages found in the earth's crust, something previously not possible with handheld XRF analyzers.
