Magnesium plays an essential role in muscular contraction and relaxation, enzyme function, production and transport of energy, and protein biosynthesis. Abnormally low levels result from intestinal loss due to diarrhea, malabsorption, or following intestinal surgery, urinary loss from alcoholism, diabetes, and some diuretics, and increased sodium or calcium excretion. Increased levels are usually a result of excessive intake from the administration of antacids or enemas but can also be observed in renal failure, treatment for preeclampsia or eclampsia, and lithium ingestion.
The Magnesium reagent is intended for the in vitro quantitative determination of magnesium in serum, plasma or urine.
