Worldwide, approximately 500,000 new cases of cervical cancer are reported each year with nearly half of the diagnoses resulting in death. Screening with the Pap smear has significantly reduced the mortality rate, but not eradicated it. Studies show that the method of specimen preparation following collection may significantly compromise detection of disease.

Traditional cervical cell collection with "broom" device.
Tip deposited in collection vial containing preservative fluid.

In the laboratory – an improved process:
Using a Shandon EZ Megafunnel™ Cell Transfer Chamber with Coated Slide, a randomized sample of cells from the collection vial is deposited by cytocentrifugation onto a glass slide.
Results in a clearly defined 22 x 14.75 mm screening area with uniform distribution.
Slides are stained with the traditional Papanicolaou method.
