The Pinhole Detector is a line-mounted instrument which senses the light passing through any through-the-strip holes. A source of light is on one side of the strip. On the other side, photomultiplier tubes transform light coming through the hole into an electrical signal, which is then filtered to eliminate the effect of ambient light, and processed to yield a 'pinhole' signal.

Measurements:
Online Pinhole detection in metal strip. Detects pinholes as small as 12.7 micrometers (0.0005") in metal strip moving at speeds of 1830 meters (6,000 ft) per minute. Under certain conditions, pinholes as small as 5 micrometers (0.0002") can be detected.
