The Smart Diffuse Reflectance allows samples to be analyzed as is, with a slight amount of grinding or by grinding and mixing with potassium bromide (KBr). Diffuse reflectance provides non-destructive analysis for a wide variety of samples. The DRIFTS technique can also be used in conjunction with silicon carbide paper for large intractable surfaces such as the paint on an aircraft or large polymer automobile parts. Adhesive backed silicon carbide paper is used to abrade the surface of the sample, transferring a small amount of sample to the disk, which can then be analyzed.
DRIFTS is commonly used for soft powders and powder mixtures, hard powders, rigid polymers. DRIFTS using Si-Carb sampling is commonly used for paint and varnish surfaces, tablets and rigid polymers.
In addition to the many advantages of using a Nicolet Smart Accessories, Smart Diffuse Reflectance has many unique features. Unlike other DRIFTS accessories, the Diffuse Reflectance Accessory gets optimal results without the need for alignment of the sample position. This makes measurements more reproducible, easier and less time consuming since traditional sample alignment is subjective and requires a reasonable skill level to get good results.
In addition, the Smart Diffuse Reflectance has convenient storage spaces located within the cover of the accessory which accommodate the accessory's sampling tools, such as Si-Carb sampling tools, adhesive Silicon Carbide patches, pre-measured and sealed KBr packets and two sample slide mounts.
The Smart Diffuse Reflectance has two permanently mounted sample cups (one for sample and one for the reference) to eliminate the need to worry about easily lost small parts and to make sample loading easier. A specialized Si-Carb holder included with the Smart Diffuse Reflectance is used with the Si-Carb measuring system and has an integral gold mirror that can be used as a background reference.
