The Thermo Scientific PBG Kit is intended to determine the presence of Porphobilinogen (PBG) in the urine within minutes. It is a rapid diagnostic assay that utilizes the Watson-Schwartz method. It is essentially an anion exchange resin that uses DMAB/acid solution to produce a color change when PBG is present in the urine. The test kit has at least a 15-month shelf life and can be stored at room temperature.
Product Detail
The porphyrias are a group of disorders which result from abnormalities in the biosynthesis of heme. They can be divided into two groups: the acute porphyrias and the non-acute porphyrias. The three common acute porphyrias are: Acute Intermittent Porphyria (AIP), Porphyria Varegata (PV) and Hereditary Porphyria (HC). During an acute attack of the heme precursor, porphobilinogen (PBG) accumulates in the liver and increased levels occur in the plasma and urine. An increase in urinary PBG therefore is strongly indicative of an acute porphyria attack.
