The Iron-Binding Capacity (IBC) test (also known as Total Iron-Binding Capacity (TIBC) test) is used to determine the total ability of serum to combine with excess ferric ions. The iron-binding protein in serum is known as siderophilin or transferrin, and normally is only partially filled with iron (in the form of ferric ions). The IBC test measures the total amount of iron which transferrin is capable of binding.
Our Iron Saturating Reagent is a simple, ready-to-use pre-treatment step designed to “saturate” a serum sample with iron solution in order to more accurately analyze the total iron binding capacity (TIBC). Use of our Iron Saturating Reagent filters out all of the free unbound iron in much less time than other pre-treatment methods. Simply pour the serum sample with iron reagent through the alumina column, drain, and run a TIBC.
