 When designing a multiple-reflection ATR accessory, there are many factors that must be carefully considered, particularly when designing a high performance accessory. Reliability, precision (reproducibility), and overall performance are perhaps the most important considerations for any given accessory configuration. There are several physical conditions that should be tightly controlled to build a lasting, high-performance accessory that will continue to meet the experimenter?s needs for years without the need for alignment, adjustment, recalibration of quant methods, or even repair. Position and positional precision of input and exit mirrors, size of entrance aperture (which determines the acceptance angle of energy), and determination and control of incidence angle are among the critical factors for a high-performance accessory. Also highly desirable is the ability to easily change crystal materials and incidence angle, as this provides adaptability to most sample types.
