FT-IR can be used as a screening tool to quickly analyze used engine and equipment oils for contaminants and oxidative breakdown. However, due to the wide variety of base oils and additive packages in use today, the industry accepted quantitative analysis methodologies are complex and require spectral reference subtraction prior to quantification.
