| Chloramphenicol is an attractive antibiotic due to its low cost, high potency and activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. But, chloramphenicol has a serious drawback in that it causes the potentially lethal condition aplastic anemia in humans in approximately 1 in 30,000 cases. Since it is not known what dosage level of chloramphenicol causes the onset of aplastic anemia, many government agencies around the world have prohibited the use of chloramphenicol in the treatment of animals producing food products for human consumption.
