| A GC-based method for determining the hydrocarbon index (HI) in water in accordance with ISO 9377-2 (Mod.) was developed. Using Ultra Fast GC, this method features analysis times comparable to those of IR methods. Compared to standard GC-FID methods for determining HI, this new method increases productivity by a factor of 10. The Ultra Fast method allows for a broad range of hydrocarbons, from n-C7 to n-C40, to be analyzed in n-pentane as the extraction solvent.
Using a Thermo Scientific TRACE GC Ultra™ equipped with an Ultra Fast Module, a programmable temperature vaporizing (PTV) inlet, and a flame ionization detector (FID), this method provided excellent linearity, reproducibility, sensitivity, and reliability. Determining HI in water using Ultra Fast GC-FID allows laboratories to easily comply with ISO 9377-2 (Mod.).
