Determination of Al in water, dialysis fluids and serum samples
Abstract: This application note describes the performance of the X Series ICP-MS for Al measurement in all the sample types relevant to renal patient monitoring.
Aluminium is the third most abundant element in the earth's crust. It is present in a variety of drinks and foodstuffs, particularly tea, beer, drinking water and some canned products. It can also be ingested as a result of using Al cookware or by consuming Al based antacids. The small amount of Al that is absorbed into the body is rapidly excreted by the kidneys in urine, except in individuals with impaired kidney function. Routine accurate and reliable measurement of Al in materials relating to renal patients is clearly an essential procedure in clinical laboratories.
