The analysis of waste water and soils for volatile organics was performed by using purge and trap for sample concentration and introduction into the GC/MS system. This involved purging the volatiles from the sample matrix into the gas phase and then concentrating them onto a sorbent trap. Separation, identification, and quantitation were accomplished using an external ionization GC-ion trap mass spectrometer system operated in MSⁿ mode to enhance selectivity and sensitivity.
