Fossilomics: Learn more about Mass Spectrometry

Learn about Mass Spectrometry solutions utilized in the study of Fossilomics

Thermo Scientific instruments, such as the Thermo Scientific LTQ XL(TM) and Thermo Scientific LTQ Orbitrap(TM) have been used in break-through fossilomics studies. In order to carry out fossilomics research, advanced instruments are needed to perform at an unmatched speed, reliability and sensitivity.

The LTQ XL and LTQ Orbitrap were used to find evidence of protein. These identified protein sequences can be used to perform phylogenetic analyses and study protein preservation.

John M. Asara, PhD, Director of Mass Spectrometry Core, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, states, "Clearly, the LTQ increased our throughput and depth of analyses, and the LTQ Orbitrap XL has done wonders for sorting out minor sequence discrepancies such as the very small mass differences between I/L and hydroxyproline for collagens in ancient fossils."

LTQ XL for fossilomics The LTQ XL and its legendary MSn performance incorporates more techniques to generate structural information through breakthrough innovations in ion trap technology.  The LTQ XL is the only mass spectrometer that offers multiple dissociation techniques, PQD, ETD and CID.  Pulsed Q Collision Induced Dissociation (PQD) is a patented technique that eliminates the low mass cut-off concern inherent with all ion traps.  This results in extensive coverage for predicted and unpredicted metabolites, and the ability to perform peptide quantification using iTRAQ™ labels.

In addition, fast polarity switching for high-sensitivity analysis of unknowns, high resolution isolation (HRI), intelligent Data Dependent™ acquisition, and optional high resolution accurate mass functionality are all tools to help the researcher gain confident structural identification routinely.

LTQ Orbitrap for fossilomics  Based on the fast and highly sensitive Thermo Scientific LTQ XL™ linear ion trap and the patented Orbitrap™ technology, the LTQ Orbitrap XL™ hybrid FTMS (Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometer) supports a wide range of applications from routine compound identification to the most challenging analysis of low level components in complex mixtures.

The analysis of complex protein mixtures is one of the most challenging tasks in the area of proteomics. The key requirements of mass spectrometry based methods are a wide dynamic range, outstanding mass accuracy, fast cycle times for MS/MS experiments, and high sensitivity. The LTQ Orbitrap XL™ meets all of these requirements and provides the most confident protein identification.
