Thermo Scientific produces equipment that may be used to separate different cell types from each other using centrifugal force.
Humans have approximately one hundred different types of biological tissues in their bodies. Each of these tissue types, in turn, is comprised of us many different kinds of cells that are each defined by the complement of proteins that are produced. Even though every single cell contains all hundred thousand or so genes of the genome, only a very small subset of those genes are converted into proteins in a given cell type.
Just as it is important to isolate a proteins or a nucleic acid away from all others in the sample of cells if you are studying proteins or nucleic acids, it is important to isolate a particular cell away from all others if you're trying to study the behavior of that cell as it responds to drug treatments or other stimuli. |
